AUSTIN (KXAN) — A panel discussion hosted by E3 Alliance says Texas kids are not as ready as they should be for kindergarten.
Dr. Amy Wiseman and Laura Koenig, E3 Alliance Director of School Readiness, joined us in the KXAN studio to discuss school readiness.
“We measure school readiness holistically, really looking at the foundational skills that children need in order to explore and learn at school,” said Koenig. “So things like understanding and expressing language, being able to sit next to their friends without hurting them, following rules, and even recognizing a few letters and numbers.”
E3 Alliance says Texas was hitting slightly above 50 percent when it comes to kindergarten readiness. However, last year there was a huge drop bringing the number down to 41 percent.
Dr. Wiseman says the drop in readiness is evident in the numbers showing that 1,000 fewer children are reading at the grade level than ever before. Leaders from across Central Texas will meet to discuss the ways they can help children get ready to start school.
