Survey uncovers strengths and challenges of pre-K
E3 Alliance surveyed 16 school districts, representing 77.4% of Central Texas pre-K students, which revealed key insights into the strengths and challenges of three- and four-year-old programs.
The survey identified a range of continuous quality improvement methods used in these districts, including structured observations, data analysis, and professional development initiatives.
Districts use such tools as CLI Engage, CIRCLE, Frog Street, and Montessori Progress Reports to monitor student progress.
Professional development efforts for teachers and staff focused on trauma-informed care, conscious discipline, and dual-language training, with both district- and campus-level sessions and virtual webinars offered to enhance educator skills.
The survey also highlighted notable strengths within the programs, such as increased language acquisition and better preparation for kindergarten.
However, challenges were also evident, including students entering with higher support needs, teacher turnover, and the strain of rapid growth and larger class sizes on schools. Families benefited from increased workforce opportunities and greater engagement, but student attendance remained a persistent issue.
Thanks to Austin, Del Valle, Elgin, Florence, Georgetown, Hays, Hutto, Leander, Lockhart, Manor, Pflugerville, Round Rock, San Marcos, Smithville, and Taylor school districts, along with Goodwater Montessori Public Charter School for participating.
