Spotlight on PLN Progress with Lake Travis ISD

Thanks to Jessica Barr, Will Davis, Jill Mancino, Sheri Remore, and Tana Wheeler for their leadership in our two-year Math Peer Learning Network (PLN). E3’s Math and Attendance PLNs met in May to share progress, ideas, and next steps.

Lake Travis ISD’s two goals were to increase the number of students from low-income households in college-aligned math courses and fully align senior-year math pathways to support postsecondary success. While full results will come later, early progress shows they’re well on their way.

The district redesigned its summer Algebra I credit recovery course to include live teaching and a pilot curriculum focused on more profound understanding to reach these goals. They also added two new summer courses — 6th- and 7th-grade honors math support — to help students prepare for advanced classes.

In addition, the district aligned pacing between 8th and 9th-grade Algebra I to support transitions better. They also began using local data to automatically place more students across all subgroups into 6th-grade honors math, aiming for at least 40% participation in each subgroup.

With the upcoming impact of SB 2124, which will increase 8th-grade Algebra 1 enrollment, the district brought together Algebra I teachers for two full-day mindset and planning sessions. These conversations are helping staff prepare for more diverse and expanded classrooms.

Looking ahead, Lake Travis ISD will:

  • Finalize and roll out a K–12 Math Instructional Framework based on research-based strategies.
  • Monitor access and retention in advanced math pathways.
  • Improve how the district communicates the value of advanced math to families, students, and staff.

We’re grateful for this collaboration and optimistic about what lies ahead.
