E3 Alliance is teaming up with Healthy Schools, LLC to give free flu vaccines to elementary school students.
The “Kick the Flu” campaign starts October 29th but mobile clinics won’t be available to students until the week of November 3-7.
This is the largest free flu immunization in the history of the state.
The campaign is targeting 55 elementary schools in central Texas.
20,000 students can get the free FluMist vaccine regardless of whether they have health insurance.
Studies by the organization show nearly half of student absences in our area are because of the flu.
The participating school districts include Hays Consolidated, Manor, Taylor, Pflugerville, & 12 schools within AISD.
The task force is targeting elementary schools because this age group is more likely to get the flu and spread it.
“This year we are concentrating on elementary schools because they are the most vulnerable. Because they’re (students) are the most likely to get the flu to parents, grandparents, siblings, and spread the infection around. If we can stop the flu before it infects the students then will help families in the community,” said Susan Dawson, President of E3 Alliance.
In order to participate students must have a signed consent form from a parent or legal guardian.
Forms were sent home by each school or can be printed here.
Most students will receive the FluMist, which is recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
Those who require a shot because of medical reasons will receive the flu shot.
